Amy Irving in Genet’s The Balcony

Jean Genet’s 1956 play The Balcony, featuring a brilliant cast led by Amy Irving, is next up in Red Bull Theater’s Revelation Readings series. Be sure to join us Monday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Set in a brothel–Madame’s “house of illusion”–while violent revolution rages outside, the play examines power roles in society. Genet himself described the play as a “glorification of the Image and the Reflection.” Critic Martin Esslin regarded The Balcony as “one of the masterpieces of our time.”

The reading will be directed by David Herskovitz, from a translation by Jean-Claude van Italie. The cast includes Will Badgett, Alan Benditt, Mary Cavett, Nehassaiu deGannes, James Tigger! Ferguson, Nadia Gans, John Kurzynowski, Kristine Haruna Lee, Nana Mensah, Samantha Needles, Hubert Point-du Jour, Randolph Curtis Rand, Clayton Dean Smith.

A Bull Session featuring Jean-Claude van Italie will follow the reading.
